Where does International Transgender Day of Remembrance come from?

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was established in 1999. The observance began as a vigil organized by transgender activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith in memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman killed in 1998. It also honored other transgender persons killed in acts of anti-transgender violence, a tradition that continues on the day.

The related but separate observance known as International Transgender Day of Visibility was first observed in 2009 as a day to positively recognize transgender people not in the context of tragedy but in a way that celebrates their victories and contributions while also acknowledging the work that needs to be done to ensure safety and equal rights.
